Distinguished Scholar in Residence to Address Geopolitcal Realities

The John Marshall Law School will welcome Professor Ved P. Nanda, vice provost of the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, as its “Distinguished Scholar in Residence” the week of March 1.

Nanda will give a lecture on “US Leadership in a World of Shifting Geopolitical Realities” at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 4. The lecture will be followed by a reception.

RIPL Symposium Focuses on Green Movement

The John Marshall Review of Intellectual Property Law (RIPL) is hosting “The Green Issue Symposium: Discussions on the Intersection of IP Law and the “Green” Movement” from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Friday, April 9, at the law school.

The symposium program is bringing together international legal academics and attorneys whose articles will be published in RIPL’s upcoming "Green Issue." Speakers will give presentations on subjects specific to the intersection of intellectual property law and the "green" movement.

The program is free, and participants will receive approximately four hours of CLE credit, including one hour of professionalism, upon completion.

John Marshall Law School Hosting Annual Intellectual Property Law Conference

The Center for Intellectual Property Law at The John Marshall Law School is hosting the 54th Annual Intellectual Property Law Conference, “Hot Topics and Developments in Patent, Trademark, Copyright, and Trade Secrets Law,” Friday, February 26, at the law school.

General registration is $195 and includes admission to the program, breakfast, lunch, reception, and all course materials. Participants will receive approximately seven hours of CLE credit upon completion. Discounts are available for John Marshall students and members of government, the judiciary, or academia.

Mexican American Lawyering is Topic of Guest Lecture at John Marshall

The John Marshall Law School is welcoming guest lecturer Michael A. Olivas, the William B. Bates Distinguished Chair of Law at the University of Houston Law Center, on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010. He will present “Colored Men and Hombres Aquí: Hernández v. Texas and the Emergence of Mexican American Lawyering.”

Olivas’ lecture is based on the book of the same name, which is a collection of 10 essays commemorating the 50^th anniversary of the Supreme Court of the United States case Hernández v. Texas. Olivas edited and wrote the introduction for the book. The case discussed involved Mexican Americans and jury selection and was published just before Brown v. Board of Education in the 1954 Supreme Court Reporter.

The 1 p.m. lecture will be preceded by an 11:30 lunch and noon introductory film presentation of “American Experience: A Class Apart, A Mexican American Civil Rights Story.”

John Marshall Fair Housing Legal Clinic Wins Precedent-Setting Case for Sisters

A landmark settlement was reached last month in a federal court that will likely be a precedent-setting ruling for caregivers of the disabled and the elderly.

The case that attorneys and students in The John Marshall Law School Fair Housing Legal Clinic brought against the Lake County Housing Authority involved the issue of live-in relative caregivers and whether their income is to be included in the calculation of the family’s income for purposes of determining eligibility for housing voucher assistance.

Australian Chief Justice Will Be Jurist In Residence At John Marshall

The John Marshall Law School is hosting Australia’s High Court Chief Justice, Robert Shenton French, as its 2010 Jurist in Residence during the week of Jan. 25.

His visit will include a lecture delivered on Tuesday, Jan. 26, visits with students and faculty, a discussion with US federal court judges, and a reception in his honor co-hosted with the Chicago Bar Association.

French has been chief justice of the High Court of Australia since September 2008. At the time of his appointment he was a judge of the Federal Court of Australia, where he had served since November 1986.

He will deliver the lecture, “Protecting Human Rights Without a Bill of Rights” at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 26, in Room 503.

The lecture is open to the public and lunch will be served. Reservations are being accepted through Jan. 12 at events@jmls.edu.

Judges Wood, Leighton Receiving Honorary Degrees at Jan. 17 Commencement

The John Marshall Law School will award 115 JD degrees, 50 LLM degrees, and an MS degree in taxation during its Jan. 17 commencement exercises at 3 p.m. at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers.

An honorary degree will be awarded to Judge Diane P. Wood of the US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, who will address the graduates. A second honorary degree will be presented to retired US District Court Judge George Leighton, who is being recognized as an exceptional friend of the law school.

Special recognition will be given to Professor Michael P. Seng, who will receive the Leadership and Dedicated Service Award, and Professor Debra Pogrund Stark , who will receive the Scholarly Achievement Award. The Adjunct Teaching Award will be presented to Eugene J. Schiltz of Coleman Law Firm.

The valedictory address will be delivered by Timothy Herman.

Students are invited to enter a writing competition with articles responsive to the challenge to act "regionally, comprehensively, and boldly" and to address how law should (or has) advanced the implementation of the Burnham plan in areas including architecture, urban planning, land use policy, housing policy, water rights, parkland preservation, and historical preservation.

The Center for Advocacy and Dispute Resolution proudly announces that The John Marshall Law School Negotiation team has placed sixth at the International Negotiation Competition in

Singapore

. The competition consisted of 16 teams from various nations; John Marshall was the only team selected to represent the United States in this competition.

EVENTS:

The Academic Achievement Program will hold a MiniBar bar exam preparation course on July 19 and 20.

Students at The John Marshall Law School Fair Housing Legal Clinic and faculty at the clinic and The John Marshall Law School Fair Housing Legal Support Center took the message of fair housing to the public during April. The various programs they participated in helped mark the national designation of April as Fair Housing Month. more
